The Three Parts of Wisdom

Wisdom consists in doing the next thing you have to do, doing it with your whole heart, and finding delight in doing it.  Meister Eckhart

Meister Eckhart was a mystic, and one who skirted (and perhaps crossed over) the boundaries into some questionnable theological and spiritual realms. Even so, there are so many gems of insight and "wisdom" in his writings. This is one of them. It is a beautiful picture of wisdom.

(1)  Wisdom means you know what the next thing is, you must do. Of course, knowing what the next thing is you must do, presupposes you have a longer range vision and perspective of the meaning and purpose of your life. It also presupposes you have some semblance of a plan that will get you to where you want to be. When you know where you want to go, and when you have a decent approach to getting there, then, you are positioned to know you must do NEXT.

(2)  Then wisdom means you do that with all your heart. You do it with all your heart because, at this very moment, your next step matters most of all. If you truly believe in the vision/mission, and you sincerely believe your plan to get there is a worthy one, then what is RIGHT NOW MOST IMPORTANT, is taking the next step. So you do it, not half-heartedly, haphazardly, non-committally (not a word), ambivalently, hesitatingly... NO - you THROW YOURSELF INTO this next step. For the next step is the crucial, pivotal point that advances you toward your goal.

(3)  Finally, wisdom means you delight in doing that next thing. No matter what is is, not matter how hard it may be, challenging or mundane, attractive or not so appealing, since it is THE THING that will advance you to where you want to go - you find delight (pleasure, joy, satisfaction, fulfillment) in doing it.

What this understanding does is enable us to live in the PRESENT MOMENT with great energy and vitality, with love and faith, with hope and courage, and to exprience God's presence, work and Word - in this present moment. Every moment is fragrant with beauty, freighted with significance, weighted with glory.

What an awesome way to live and LEAD.
