Spiritual Leadership: Napping Through Life

The need for endless learning is difficult, sometimes profoundly painful.
But it is better than napping through life.
John Gardner

For the final sermon of the year...and as we stand on the brink of a brand new year, I have been reflecting on the theme of "being awakened" and living in the light. The ideas running around in my mind (okay, right now, they are more like drifting around in my mind) have to do with the sleepiness and drowsiness of our age. Lethargy and sluggishness are common.

Bright luminaries full of wisdom, passionate fiery commitment and stirring engagements with the things that matter most - when we find it (or her or him) it seems the exception.

John Gardner describes what I believe will be true of all spiritual leadership in the season ahead.

We will be life long learners... or we will be very little that counts.

We will pay the price to invest in dynamic growth from dynamite ideas... or we will fade away.

I am so grateful to number among my friends, some of the most intensely devoted life long learners I have ever met. They love to learn. They love to have their intellects in the service of the Lord of Light who said his way is Truth. They engage in vigorous discussion about the things that matter the most.

They read.
They think.
They converse.
They teach ... testing their ideas out on others.
And they reorder their life, ministry and leadership so it aligns with truth.

May you be such a leader. May you be surrounded by a community of such leaders.
