The Little Things Matter

It is not just the Devil who is in the details.
Look carefully enough and you will GOD is there as well!

Samuel Johnson quote, studying little things

It is by studying little things that we attain the great art of having as little misery and as much happiness as possible. Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson is one of my favorite old writers.

This was a new quote from Johnson, and I found myself nodding vigorously in agreement.

If you are at all like me, you tend to over-estimate the power of big things, and under-estimate the power of the little things. To live in North American in the 21st century is to love the big stuff. We love the show, the celebrity, the grand experience, the show-stopping event, the BIG PLAY, the dynamic and dramatic speech. We tend to think that a really powerful episode is all we need.

Johnson disagrees... and I disagree along with Johnson.

It is the little stuff that matters. Great things are composed of many small good things. The way to have a good life is by knowing the details that make for such a life, and then living in those details, so they are repeated over and over. It is as you are embodied in those details that you begin to see their power.

The daily act of gratitude will bring about the happiness of a grateful life.
The many little prayers will add up to the happiness of a prayerFULL life.
The repeated kindnesses you offer day after day will make you a Kindly person.

The same is true for every little act of helpfulness, of thoughtfulness, of diet and nutrition, of exercise, and really - about anything. God is very much in the mundane, repetitious details that make for a wonderful life.

So, find those little things and pour yourself into them. Embrace them. Own them. Possess them. And then live into and out of them. That is the way of happiness.
