Leadership Lesson 01:
You Can Make a Difference

Kouzes and Posner are some of the most well known authors in the field of leadership. Their book, The Challenge of Leadership is one of the primary texts on the work of leadership. In 2010, they wrote a little book called The Truth About Leadership. It was a short summary of the most important lessons (truths) they discerned in their decades of research on leadership. I am going to blog on their ten most essential leadership lessons in the next two weeks.

The first lesson is simply this. All leadership begins with a belief in ONE basic reality: Leaders are those people who truly believe they can make a difference. They believe they are here to make a difference. It does not matter whether you have a role, title or position. It does not even fundamentally matter what gifts or skills you have. What matters is that you believe you have the ability to do something that will matter.

With that belief, you will find the motivational energy to act. Which is what leaders do. They act. They engage. They step out. They choose. They decide. That is always the start of making a difference. The first step.

Do you believe you matter?
Do you believe you can make a difference?
Then take a step today. And then another. Keep on taking those steps and in just a little while, you will be surprised at what you have accomplished.
