On Good Work

In Five Minds for the Future, Howard Gardner describes the characteristics of "good work." By good, he means work that is:

Excellent - high quality, disciplined

Ethical - takes into account the well-being of the wider community

Engaging - enjoyable, meaningful, purposeful, satisfying

Enhancing - provides sustenance

When these four qualities are present, then your work can be described (and experienced) as good work. The more these are not a part of your work, the more likely it is that your work does not quality to be good work.

Take a few minutes and think about your work in light of these four qualities. Give your "work" a letter grade on how you experience it. What do you find? What steps can you take to upgrade your work so that it becomes good and maybe even great?

If you are a supervisor, what steps can you take to upgrade the work experience of those you lead?
