Dig the Well Before You Are Thirsty

I don't know if this is actually a Chinese Proverb... or someone just labeled it as one. But it is wisdom.

Dig the well before you are thirsty.

In other words:

  • Plan ahead.
  • Prepare.
  • Stock the pantry before the emergency.
  • Save the money before you retire.
  • Do the research needed before the presentation.
  • Get the facts straight before you make the argument.
  • Do the hard thinking before the planning meeting.

What's coming up in your life, your work, your leadership, your ministry? Don't assume that in the moment and on the spot you can make it happen, that you can figure it out, that you can Wing It. And that you can get great results.

It seems to me, that I am in more and more situations these days where people are showing up unprepared. I don't know if it is because people are busier than ever and they don't think they have time to "dig the well." I don't know if it is because people don't think they need to prepare ahead of time. I don't know if it is just laziness or apathy. I don't know if some Christians think they are hindering the Holy Spirit if they prepare. But more people are showing up unprepared . . . and it is obvious.

Great leaders "dig the well ahead of time."

What digging do you have to do this week?
