To All My Hobbit Friends

On the Shoulders of Hobbits book reviewWhether Real, Allegorical or Imaginary!
As the third and final installment of The Hobbit is just about upon us, I want to give you a STRONG recommendation. I URGE you my fellow Hobbits, to take some time and go really deep on the immense spirituality and virtue that is found in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

You will enjoy the movie(s) far more when you understand the lessons and "secrets" they contain.

I am quite far through (but not quite finished with) a wonderful book. It is:

On the Shoulder of Hobbits: The Road to Virtue With Tolkien and Lewis by Louis Markos.

I know how busy you are.
I know you must be selective in what you read.
I know I can't recommend too many books.

Therefore, I am highly intentional in this recommendation.

Markos is a professor of English and a Tolkien/Lewis scholar. He manages to combine profundity and wisdom with readability. His words dance over the pages. His insights sparkle. He respins the tale of Hobbits and Narnians for those of us who live in post-modern Middle Earth, where mystery is dimmed and truth, beauty and goodness in grave peril.

Which is why we need stories like:
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
The Chronicles of Narnia

They are the weavings of imagination, truth and virtue into the stories of ordinary people invited to dangerous adventures that will remake them on the way.

This book is easy to read. To borrow an idea from Lewis, every chapter contains worlds of ideas that are larger than the pages.

You will not be disappointed.
You will find guidance and encouragement.
You will receive a renewal of faith, love and hope.

For all my local fellow Hobbits - immediately call Hearts and Minds to get a copy. (717-246-3333)
For those who live at a distance, you may have to ransack Mordor and the land of Calormen (i.e. Amazon.com) to get a copy.
